HML Headquarters Skipton

Brentwood Design Partnership have been appointed by the Youth Hostel Association for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering services for the upgrade and refurbishment of the Listed Buildings that make up the Castleton Youth Hostel in Derbyshire site including Castleton Hall and Nether House.

They are of national (possibly international) significance because of their association with Samuel Moore who was a close friend of Freidereich Engels and translated Marx and Engels’ works Das Capital and The Manifesto of The Communist Party and lived at Nether House from 1901 (when it was owned by his brother Col Joseph Hall Moore).

They are of regional significance because of their association with significant figures and events in the development of the village of Castleton as a centre of lead mining and tourism and because of the survival of many original documents relating to Castleton Hall, the earliest of which dates back to 1712.
