New Wakefield Street Tower, Manchester by Hodder + Partners

New Wakefield Street Tower

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] Hodder + Partners has submitted plans for this 111m-tall student apartment block on New Wakefield Street, Manchester.

The 37-storey skyscraper scheme near Oxford Road Station will be the city’s second tallest residential building, after Ian Simpson’s Beetham Tower, and will house 525 student bedrooms.

Sitting above a podium, the four towers are staggered in height with the two smaller blocks on the south side of the development and the larger towers on the north east and north west corners.

A spokesman for the practice said the scheme would create a ‘significant urban landmark to signpost Oxford Road station which remains the only one of the four Manchester stations not ‘landmarked’.
‘From key gateway vistas, the scheme would compliment the dispersed array of towers which currently demarcate the city’s major hubs while being sensitive to the more immediate context via its slender profile and architectural treatment.’

Should the latest scheme win approval from Manchester City Council, work is due to start on site by June.
