AN £80m student housing block in the heart of Leeds is now the world's tallest building of its type.
Its owners made the claim as the final phase of the Sky Plaza was completed.
The purpose-built tower of flats in Claypit Lane means is now also the largest of its type in Europe with capacity for almost 1,500 students.
The building itself is 77m high, but stands on a hill 65m above sea level, making it appear taller than Bridgewater Place, which stands at 110m and is officially Leeds's tallest building.
It will provide professionally managed accommodation for 533 students in a range of cluster flat sizes, studios and one-bed flats.
The purpose-built scheme was designed by award-winning Leeds based architect careyjones and developed by the student accommodation specialist Unite.
The managing director of development at Unite, Richard Simpson, said: "With several higher education institutions in one city, Leeds is an important market for Unite and we are delighted to have completed Sky Plaza, which will set new standards for the provision of high-quality student accommodation.
"Underlining this, reservations for the spacious, high-specification and contemporary living spaces are going strong and we hope that Sky Plaza will become a well-known feature on Leeds's skyline and we look forward to opening its doors to new customers in September."
The Plaza phase one was completed in September 2006 and is now home to 964 students.
Sky Plaza is within walking distance of Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds University, Leeds Technology College and Leeds College of Music.
The development will bring much needed new bed spaces to Leeds as the number of students applying to the city's higher education institutions continues to rise.
The 2008-2009 academic year saw a 10.4 per cent increase in total UK student numbers and the number of applications for 2009-2010 in Leeds alone is up a further 7.8 per cent.
Conversely, the supply of new purpose-built accommodation in the UK is small and Unite estimates the net new supply in 2009 and 2010 will be only about 6,000 beds and 4,000 beds respectively, creating huge competition for accommodation.
Director Robert Cunniff at careyjones, said: "Sky Plaza represents a massive leap forward in terms of quality for students in the UK."
Rachel Drysdale, associate vice president of Financial Dynamics, covering public relations for the scheme, said: "This is the tallest student accommodation building in the world."
